Friar Park Urban Village Land Remediation

Closes 29 Nov 2024

Opened 18 Oct 2024

Overview

Friar Park Urban Village proposes the remediation and re-development of the largest brownfield site in the West Midlands.  The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) jointly own the land and are working in partnership to see the site developed.

The site has been allocated for housing in  SMBC’s planning policy for circa 20 years. The allocation is currently proposed in the emerging Sandwell Local Plan to address local housing demand, with circa 630 new homes proposed.

However, before such development can take place the land requires treatment to address contaminated material on site.  The works will involve; removing material, treating it and then re-using it on site. This material will be used to get the land to state where it is suitable to accommodate housing development.  Material re-use includes creating a bund to form a linear parkland along the eastern boundary of the site and to act as a buffer between Bescot Sidings and the M6.   Remaining treated land will be used to fill and flatten areas that are in need.

There will inevitably be impacts that will arise from the remediation works. However, will be managed to minimise impact through the introduction of control measures. This includes use of: specialist equipment to reduce dust spread, odour neutralising and careful management of operation hours and access.
