Abandoned Goods Policy
Overview
When a council tenancy ends, belongings are sometimes left behind in the property, garden or storage areas. This can happen for many reasons, including illness, bereavement, moving in a hurry, or difficult personal circumstances.
Sandwell Council has written a draft Abandoned Goods Policy. This policy explains:
- What the Council means by “abandoned goods”
- What former tenants are responsible for when they move out
- What steps the Council will take if belongings are left behind
- How the Council will try to contact people about their belongings
- How long items may be stored
- When items may be donated, recycled or disposed of
- How fairness, dignity and reasonable adjustments are considered
This consultation is about:
- Whether the policy explains these things clearly, and
- Whether the approaches set out in the policy feel fair, reasonable and appropriate
It is not about individual cases. Your feedback will help us check that the policy is easy to understand, treats people fairly, and balances residents’ rights with the need to re‑let homes quickly.
This survey should take around 5 minutes to complete. Your responses are confidential.
