Overview

In the 2023 Spring Budget statement it was announced that Sandwell had been successful and was awarded £20m in Levelling Up funding to deliver 65 new affordable homes. The project will involve the redevelopment of under-utilised and lower quality residential and commercial premises which will be redeveloped to deliver new high-quality residential properties. As well as public realm improvement around the town centre.

The initial proposals seek to deliver the following outputs:

• 65 high quality and affordable apartments
• Introduction of more green spaces
• Creation of high quality public spaces
• Improved safety for motorist and pedestrians

A planning application was approved in October 2024 for two new blocks of affordable housing, providing 55 apartments in total, on the cleared sites either side of Union Street.

The council is currently tendering the building work, with construction planned to start towards the summer.

A further planning application was submitted in January 2025 for the former Conservative Club in Union Street. Subject to technical feasibility, it is proposed that this locally listed building is to be retained and refurbished, while rear outbuildings will be cleared, and new development constructed at the rear.

This site will provide a further 15 new and converted social housing apartments. Subject to planning approval, work on the conversion and new build is set to start in the autumn.

A wide-ranging set of environmental improvements will benefit the whole town centre, including Owen Street, the precinct, Union Street and the former Tipton Green Branch Canal walkway. The council is now consulting residents and businesses on these plans.
